Meta Tag Keywords & How Google Meta Tags Impact SEO

Although meta tag keywords were a large part of getting your website a higher page rank in search engines years ago, their use these days is somewhat limited. This quickly led to abuse. Website owners would just use the meta tag keywords for page rankings, but the sites themselves were substandard. This led to spammy websites with little real information, and Google in time changed the way the search engines worked. Now meta tag keywords, though still occasionally used, don’t mean nearly as much anymore for page ranking.

This is not to say that keywords themselves are useless. On the contrary, they form the basis of successful SEO or Search Engine Optimization advertising. The best keywords now are the ones properly researched and included in the web content. Organic page ranking is the way search engines work now. That means that the keywords are a part of the content and that the content is relevant to the website actually offers something to visitors.

Search engines take a dim view of websites laden with keywords just to pad out the content and attract their attention. It is call keyword stuffing, and nowadays if that happens, websites can get banned and won’t show up at all. So the proper use of keywords is the key to Internet marketing success, whether you’re running an affiliate website or a monetized blog.

This is not to say that meta tag keywords are completely useless. It just means that it isn’t the only determining factor to page ranking at this point. The way to find good keywords is to do your research. Start with one of the free keyword tools available on the Internet, like the one offered by Google, and you’ll be able to find a good list of keywords and phrases related to the original one you searched for. You will also see how often people have searched for it so you can check how useful it will be for your SEO purposes.

The next thing you should do is check the keywords and phrases you plan on using by doing a search for them yourself. Now your objective is to determine how much competition there is so you don’t end up using the same keywords the majority of other website owners are using. It would be very hard to get a good ranking if a keyword already pulled hundreds of thousands of websites.

Of course, the same keywords can be used as meta tag keywords as well as for your content. As part of your SEO strategy, make sure to use the most important keyword in the title of the blog post, article, or product review you’re writing. If you use the keywords sparingly throughout your post, say to a three to five percent density along within the title, you’ll greatly increase the chance of a favorable page ranking.

This chance increases if you make frequent updates to your site to show that it’s a current and busy site as opposed to a dead website. Web search engines will avoid websites that show little to no activity. Along with meta tag keywords, a sound SEO approach to website content and design will help make your site more profitable.
